EVILE w/ Pythia & Wolf

The day couldn’t have been any more miserable, freezing cold and raining, not to mention that it’s a Sunday night and transport was non-existent! But that was not going to dampen my mood, as I was on my way to a gig I had been waiting for, for a long time! I finally get to see Evile live!
This was one gig that I needed to have a good drink to, 2 pints down and I’m ready for the first band…

PYTHIA
Kicking the night off we have London based classical metallers, Pythia.

After their debut in 2007, they are back to promote their 2nd studio album, “The Serpents Curse”.
I hadn’t heard any of their music before and someone in the crowd informed me that they were a lot like Evanescence....How wrong that person was as their first song proved that they are nothing like them!

With strong riffs and beautiful vocals that would put Within Temptation to shame, they certainly showed their worth, but it felt slightly out of place as the crowd seemed slightly uninterested, almost like it was falling on deaf ears.

They did have a few fans though and that is what kept them going.
I kept thinking that I recognized her voice from somewhere, and then I remembered that she had done some backing vocals for Dragonforce. Maybe some of their fans are here tonight!

Their visual style is certainly something to be admired, kitted out in medieval clothing and smoke machines going off, it all felt very theatrical, which isn’t a bad thing but it was certainly not entertaining the horde of metal heads eagerly awaiting Evile.

Their soaring solos were definitely enough to get a few cheers from the crowd but aside from that they were pretty much forgotten by the crown. I however would have liked to have seen a longer set from them than the 6 song set that they show cased.

Setlist:
Betray My Heart
Long Live the King
Army of the Damned
Just a Lie
Sweet Cantation
Heartless

WOLF
Next up is some Swedish heavy metal in the form of Wolf! I find it so hard to believe that they have been around since 1995 and I have barely heard of them! With 6 studio albums and 3 EP’s under their belt, this band knows by now what it takes to get a crowd going.

It helps that tonight they seem to have a strong fan base, even when I was in the crowd I could hear discussions going on about them. The minute the vocalist starts singing, the first thing that springs to mind is “fuck, he sounds like Bruce Dickinson!!” you could almost be forgiven for thinking that they are some kind of Iron Maiden cover band!

I only wish I knew the words as I feel like I just want to sing me heart out!! In between songs you had massive chants of “WOLF! WOLF! WOLF!”

I was slightly distracted however by the group of guys in front of me who thought that the singer’s accent was the funniest thing that they had ever heard! I also think that they have the happiest bassist in the whole of the metal genre, all he done was smile!

They are full of powerful, heavy chords fronted by a man will an unbelievable vocal range.
It did get a point though, around halfway through the set where there music started to pretty much sound the same.

The set seemed to go on a little longer than it was supposed to; you could feel the impatience in the room. They are a great band but they had to make way for an even better band….

Setlist:

Make Friends With Your Nightmares
Hail Caesar
Full Moon Possession
Voodoo
Steelwinged Savage Reaper
Skull Crusher
Evil Star
The Bite
K-141 Kursk
Genocide
Venom
Speed On

EVILE

And here they are ladies and gents, the band that everyone has been waiting all night for!
This amazing 4 piece metal band from Huddersfield, formed in 2003, are here tonight to rip every single person in this place a new one!
With 3 albums under their belt and a highly successful UK tour along with it, there is no wrong that these guys can do.

They have the crowd eating out of the palms of their hands and they have only just got on stage! They kick off the night with “Hundred Wrathful Deities”, a gut churning slice of metal taken from their 2nd album. This is followed by the brutal taste of “Enter The Grave” and “Cult”.

When “Man Against Machine” kicked in, I swear, you have never seen such a huge pit for a venue that’s not all that big! It actually makes me very grateful that I was at the front and out of the way otherwise I would be limping out of that place!

The most poignant night would certainly be “In Memoriam”, a tribute to their late bassist, Mike Alexander who sadly passed away in 2009. It was so still that you could barely hear a breath.

A good handful of people either held up lighters or put up the horns, I even spotted a man crying near me. A beautiful tribute, so simple and doing exactly what it was supposed to. Not ashamed to say that I had a tear in my eye too.

After this, the night only got heavier and heavier and the pit got bigger with it. The one thing that I love most about this band is that, no matter how big they are, they are the most down to earth bunch of guys ever, even to the extent of cracking jokes with the crowd. At the end of the set they came back with one more song “Schizophrenia”, a heavy end to what was a heavy night.

The gig just went too quick for me, I wish it could have been a lot longer, and I know that I’m not the only one that thought that way! Easily one of the best gigs that I have been to in a long time. Meeting the guys again afterwards was just an added bonus!

Setlist:
Hundred Wrathful Deities
Enter The Grave
Cult
Centurion
Man Against Machine
Metamorphosis
In Memoriam
Thrasher
Eternal Empire
Origin Of Oblivion
Five Serpents Teeth
Infected Nation
Schizophrenia
