Misconducters
Pariah
October 2017
Released: 2017, MS Metal
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Aaron Yurkiewicz

Following the career arc of the Brazilian crossover hooligans known as Misconducters has been a lot like witnessing a younger sibling grow into their own adult identity. It’s always been entertaining, but with every passing year (or release, in this case), it gets a little more real, a little more serious. And at a certain point, you’re forced to step back and say “okay, this is who they are.”

Enter PARIAH, the latest Misconducters full length release, and easily their most accomplished to date. Beyond the fact that lone holdout Denfire has opted to record all of the instruments himself, beyond the Frank Frazetta inspired cover art, and beyond the fact that the Misconducters brand has been building towards this moment for the better part of a decade, PARIAH is a watershed moment.

The opening “Skyline” introduces a more prog flavored punchy jam than we’ve since come to expect from the outfit, and “Top of the Chain” intersects that formula with familiar Malcom Young rhythmic punch. As the album progresses, gems like deep fried swing of “Born Down South” and the crunchy title track pull you in closer and keep heads a’ banging while still keeping the procession raw and DIY.

Denfire’s always kept the Misconducters recipe pretty simple – catchy riffs with just enough melody to trap you in. But with PARIAH, everything is amplified to eleven – the punk rock “f@#k you” attitude, the infectiously catchy rhythms and the sing-along melodies that follow you with every spin; it’s a good time no matter how you slice it. If you’re still ignorant to the Misconducters body of work, PARIAH is a fantastic gateway drug and and all-around good time. Life’s too short to listen to bad music; listen to Misconducters.
