Angel Vivaldi
Synapse
November 2017
Released: 2017, Indie
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: JP

I’m a pretty big fan of guitar heroes but this is my first experience enjoying the music of Angel Vivaldi. Some quick pre-review research indicates that this is the fifth solo album of the American shredder. How did I miss that?

SYNAPSE is a very brief, 30-minute nine song, instrumental album with a very loose theme of physical chemicals produced by the body. Hence titles like ‘Adrenaline’ , which one could predict is the speedy opening cut, to cuts like ‘Endorphin’, ‘Serotonin’ and others. I really like this concept and it works well.

There is no denying his skill on the guitar. Backed by some white-hot studio guns, SYNAPSE blazes by almost in a blur. His type of shred is not so much in the Joe Stump style, but slightly more’ modern’ for lack of a better term. It seems a bit more ethereal, spacey but still fast and exciting for the most part. The songs do work well as songs and showcases for his talent simultaneously which is another bonus.

I’m not a musician so finding the right words to describe instrumental music is challenging, but in do know what I like and this album is marvelously entertaining. It is intense and laid-back at the same time, an apparently contradictory statement but there is a mellow smoothness in and amongst the shred that makes this very palatable. Even his buddy Gus G. drops by for a quick guest shred.

I’m probably pretty late to the party with Angel Vivaldi but never too late to enjoy this excellent record.
