Nightrage
The Venomous
May 2017
Released: 2017, Despotz
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: John Haseltine

The Greek / Swedish transplants really do not need an introduction. By now, most of you in the metal community should at least have heard of Nightrage. Nightrage is the band that featured virtuoso Gus G. for the first two releases and six years of his axe mastery. Yet, it does seem that not all have given them a chance.

I have been on and off listening to Nightrage ever since I picked up their second release, DESCENT INTO CHAOS about a year after its release. Hard to believe that has been a bit over tens ago. When I say on and off, it means that from time to time, Nightrage are a good listen. Many of the releases after never made a big enough impression on me to make me want to listen all the time.

I might say I did have high hopes for THE VENOMOUS, but Nightrage have once again proven me wrong by just a pinch. On this one, it is a whole lot of the same. They offer the same blend of melodic death metal that they have been spewing out since the get go. Please do not take this the wrong way as this one does not totally disappoint. It just follows the same protocol of the band. This is never a bad thing, but can tend to put a bands image in a sort of rut.

THE VENOMOUS does have its moments of catchy hooks and grooves that get a little better with each listen. Some of the courses tend become a bit memorable as well. Night rage started in the genre with a specific sound that never blew the hinges off the doors or anything, and they remain to be doing just the same.

I do recommend this however. Especially if Nightrage has been on your listening radar for a while. They tend to have a close likeness to Insomnium, Mors Principium Est, Dark Tranquility, and Soilwork. So any fans of those mentioned bands will surely enjoy Nightrage. As for the diehard Nightrage fans, what can I say? THE VENOMOUS is another quality release for your listening pleasure. Enjoy!
